READING JOURNAL-6
YanıtlaSilThe topics of this week are about self-esteem and the way to be success.I likened these topics to self-help books. Both of them try to tell something, but neither of them is successful. Why I think so is evident.Initially, first text try to make a picture about self-esteem on our mind, but the convoluted language make us confused ,and the drops and upswings in self-esteem cannot be generalized because each subconscious is different from each other, also experiences of people depend on people's lives.Otherwise, every one lives in a same way.In addition, although the second text is much more understandable,it only gives us classic advices, which means it has been already been known. However, the author should have explained these advices with examples. The only point that I appreciated is the part of the child drive because the part distinguish the text from others. Also, the part clarifies why we are unsatisfied with our jobs or activities because people determine that listening inner voice is unnecessary anymore. This reason is that people want to make a living. In other words, money is primary from now on simply because people try to find jobs which help earning much more money, but this choice can decrease a person's self-esteem.By the way,I want to raise a question about the first text. Why does self-esteem make an upswing during adulthood. In my judgment, people in adulthood must face with some sort of problems. They must decide which one is the best about their future life.I can' find an answer how people in adulthood are not worn out by these situations, and how people in adulthood enhance their self-esteem
Doğancan,
SilIt's a top-notch work. Congratulations!! This is a real reading journal that you have perfectly matched the critical points in both texts.
READING JOURNAL-6
YanıtlaSilThe topic of the week is self-esteem.Basically,the author wrote his writing about period of the self-esteem.When does it decrease or increase?.The text icludes three parts and some researches about it.I liked the text.It tries to find an an answer to ups and downs in the life. The general opinion is that the self-esteem rises in childhood, decreases in adolesence, increase in young adulthood and again decrease in adulthood. At this point,I want to say something about periods of the childhood and adulthood. In the childhood, children never mind what people think or will think about them.In the other words, they don't care other ones. That's why high self-esteem looks very normal at these ages, but if we look at adulthood period,we can see it's decreasing. Why?To the author, old people lose lots of things before reacing these ages.I agree with the author ,but about young adulthood,I am not sure.If self-esteem decreases in the adolescence, how it increases in the adulthood. To me,most of the people still don't have self-esteem after the adolescence. In my opinion, childhood and adolescence are very important and most of the increasing and decreasing depend on these times.
Melih,
SilIt's OK with the remarks you make on the main points discussed in the passage. It seems to me that you can make more reflections but less summary next time you write. You could also relate some ideas in each text.
READING JOURNAL - 6
YanıtlaSilThe topic of this week is about self-esteem. First of all, I want to talk about the text which is in our reading book. The author cut the topic into sections. For the introduction part of a passage, mentioning the people whose words are stated int the text briefly is good to give the readers some clues about the way used for explaining the topic. People who are different ages have different points of view, so spreading these differences helps the author show the readers that everything is different at every ages. After that, there is a study part which I totally agree with the author and tha results of the studies. It says that in both childhood and adulthood, the self-esteem of people is in the highest degree, on the other hand, in both adolescence and old ages, it is lowest. That the fluctuation of self-esteem is affected by lots of things like gender, social status, and characteristics of people is said in the text. At the last part of the text, there are some examples about changing in self-esteem. Consequently, I like this text, and the way the author chose to explain his opinions. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same things for the second text which is written in our extra paper. Its topic is about how to be succesful. Self-esteem constitutes a very little part of it; however, there is nothing that succeeded to catch my attention. The way which the author used is awful because he told nothing catchy, so in my point of view, he is not persuasive about the topic. It is obvious that the first text is absolutely better than tha second one.
Özlem,
SilThank you for your remarks on each of the texts. You really responded to the authors' styles as well as the content of the work. The reader also doesnt think it's merely the summary of the texts.
What is self esteem? and when is it change? this is our topic.Briefly, I can say self esteem is respect oneself, in other words self respect.I want to learn more about self esteem, and I found 2 parts of self esteem. low and high. when you have a high level self esteem, you will be confident, happy, highly motivated and have the right attitude to succeed. When you have a low level self esteem, low self esteem comes from a poor self image. Your self image is based on how you see yourself, if you see yourself honest, hardworking, reliable. There is no problem, but in other situation you have a low level self esteem, and ow level self esteem impacts your thinking. For example, low self esteem feeds your negative emotions and thinking. This can cause to lose confidence.I think self esteem is very important for our life. Also as you can see, even me told as nicely as the book, what self esteem is.
YanıtlaSilCem,
SilThese are remarks but not based on any point in either of the texts. Why didn't you link them to different time periods in life and associations with self-esteem before defining what and how it is for you. Next time, please keep this in mind.
READING JOURNAL-6
YanıtlaSilChanging is good or not?Human beings has complain about it a lot,and this week the main point can be explained with these two words: success and self-esteem.In our day ,all people want to success with something which is chosen by their own desire. This is the main problem exactly.I mean everyone has a talent, and self-esteem exists with this talent, and self-esteem is enough to make us happy. These two texts did not mention about any right decision and doing the right thing. The author who wrote second text itemize being success. It is important and useful to read, it mentioned setting goals, but how can we be sure to chose the right thing. This topic is very important, but when the both author do not mention my thoughts, there is no value in my opinion.
Orhun,
SilIt's nice to see that you've made a reflection on the style of the author. However, you had better reflect on some specific parts in the texts and mention which point you've liked and didn't like and why and why not.
The topic of this week was self-esteem, and how to be successful. I want to start with self-esteem. Text was exciting and it included interesting informations. According to researchers, self-esteem level is changing very often. This changes can last forever, but sometimes increase and sometimes decrease. On the one hand, death of a beloved or another bad situation can cause a decrease. On the other hand, to marry someone or having a baby can increase your self-esteem. This changes affect our life critically. The other topic of this week was how to be successful. Author wrote down simple steps of success. First was self-esteem. When I saw self-esteem, I thought the book was explaining the steps of second text. Both are related, and self-esteem was a subtitle of second text. Writer said that all of them were necessary. I totally agree with him.
YanıtlaSilYiğit,
SilIs this a summary paragraph or a reflection of your thoughts originating from any of the reading texts. We don't expect you to list the points raised but your indvidiual remark on that. Please keep this in mind next time you give it a try.
READING JOURNAL - 6
YanıtlaSilI don't agree with text that is telling about self-esteem. It is pointless to generalize people. We can not say that self-esteem is highest at early ages because it depends on personality.I wonder if the author heard about the word which is called humble.I think only experience effects self -esteem and personality. As the text mentionned self-esteem can be effected by lots of things ,but I do not think theres any biological effect on personality. Its not surprising that people who are old have a high self-esteem because they have experience and a good knowlodge. I really liked the 3rd part of the text which is like an example abput affects on self-esteem. It mentions about experience.
İlker,
SilThis is a short but to the point reading journal. Your discussion point is clear. Yet, you could elaborate on your reasons more.
READING JOURNAL - 6
YanıtlaSilThis week was about self-esteem and how to celebrate successes. The one on the book is self-esteem. It gives information and examples in the first part. In short, it says self-esteem rise and fall depending on your age. In the second part of this text, there is research which trying to clarify the age thing. There are many different people participated in this research. The third part is more about the specific events in our life and how they affect. There can be a rise or a drop in self-esteem when something which is significant happened. For example, no one can say a death of beloved one or marriage or divorce has no effect on oneself. Therefore, experiences matter. Also, I believe that experiences are more important than what our age is because I don’t think people are all same in the same age. For the second text, I can say that it looks like a cheap copy of self-esteem books. However, I don’t like that type of books. It gives details and advices which are already known by everyone. There will be no man who has his life changed because of this text.
YanıtlaSilErsel,
SilThis is more like the summary of the points. Throughout the writing, you've mentioned the points raised in the text but didn't focus on your personal reflection on the remarks of the author in a desired way. Yet, the last few sentences may be thought in that sense.
READING JOURNAL-6
YanıtlaSilThe topic of this week was about self-esteem. In the first reading text the author talked about levels of self-esteem.First he gave an family for example. Whole family members have a different level of self-esteem. After he gave the example, he showed the studies. I agree with the studies. I think self-esteem's level never stands same level, it always changes. That the highest levels are in childhood and adulthood is very normal because when people are childeren, they do not know a lot of things about life, and they do not care ,so they have high self-esteem. The other period which people have the highest self-esteem is adulthood. When people gain experiences from the life, they also gain self-esteem, but it's mean is not that the older, the higher self-esteem. Old people lose their a lot of ability, when they do not do something by themselves, they feel very bad and useless, and this way they lose their self-esteem. Actually I try to say that I agree with the author, but I cannot say it for the other author because I think it is very silly. I hate this kind of writings.Somethings like 'Do it, do not it!' do not help people. I do not believe it. Because of it I cannot say that 'people, it is a good reading text about self-esteem. If you read it, you can gain a lot of things from it.'
Elif,
SilI see that you have both paraphrased the text and reflected on the remarks of the author. The reader can easily follow why you disagree with the author. well done
Reading Journal-6
YanıtlaSilEveryone in world has self-esteem because they are human. The text was quite appropriate to explain this fact with psychological researches but I would like to point out that we can show respect to the others if we have respect to ourselves.A man who has no respect and trust to himself has nothing to lose, so he wouldn't care the others too.He is not a healthy human anymore. When we looked the !greatest! psychos in history ,we can see these kind of people.Because of this fact , a low self-esteem level is a real ailment which needs to cure, and we need some success to cure this illness. As youncan see ,for the same reasons people want to be successful in their life.It is a human being thing, too, but I don't think that anybody can reach the success by following some steps like given in second text.I always think these kind of articles and self-help books ridiculous, and as the way they always are, the second text was quite ridiculous. There are some facts about life ; person cannot have a high self-esteem level all the time and may not be successful in everytime. The important thing about life is not to find things, just keep searching things,so people should not give up when they have low self-esteem or when they are not successful. They need to just go on living and searching for better days, better feelings and anything they can make better.
Elif,
SilI am content with your remarks related to the texts. You haven't summarized much but reflected on some points.
