  1. This week,we discussed broadly in Antarctica.I bet I learned a lot both texts.First text in the book was generally questioning what is Antarctica, what does it lock down, how did countries reach an agreement on sovereignty of Antarctica, and so on.Other text was more detailed than first’s in scientific way. Therefore, the second text interested me more than the second’s.It was great to read the Antarctica’s climate which was very detailed in the second text. Also ,the author cited what biodiversity of Antarctica is.Although most of the time I do not like biological terms in texts, the author did not make me bored, but I want to mention that if I did not read the first text,it would be hard to perceive contents of the second text.I wish the author wrote the first text avoided mentioning superfluous details.Nevertheless,in my estimation ,this week was very informative.

This week,we mainly discuss Antarctica.Actually, thanks to both texts,we are informed about the future and the past of Antarctica. In that way, texts seem to be taken from same book.At that time, each text explains clearly why Antarctica is useful and searchable. Also, each of the text's intelligibility influence the readability of both text in a good way.The text which is discussed on Monday separate the people who interest in Antarctica into four groups;scientists, tourists, environmentalists, seekers.Did I have a chance to participate in one group,I would be a seeker because modern and global civilization needs having more and more oil and minerals.Lack of these necessities affect countries' economy and citizens in a bad way.For instance, nowadays, the liter price of gasoline increases day after day.I think it will reach 5 TL soon. The author states that contries which do not endorse the Madrid Protocol can claim that Antarctica belongs to us.What if they really try to capture this continent?I wish some countries would try to make this.I think every country is aware of the delicacy of the most remote, inhospitable, and strangest, coldest place on Earth,or they are conscious of its indisputable merits. The second text's author mentions that there are plenty primitive creature in Antarctica.According to this,I want to raise an question to author:What if these creatures contain hazardous modification which is enough to risk humankind

At the end of the term, finally, there is catchy topic for the reading texts. This week's topic is Antarctica that has been a contraversial issue for a long time. The first text which is stated in the book focuses on people -scientist, tourists, environmentalists, oil and mineral seekers- who go to Antarctica for any purpose. This continent catches people's attention because it reserves things which are like when they were at ancient times. Some interesting information that is about geographical circumstances and climate is also written in the text, but this is not the main point of the author. The prime mover of the text is the protection of Antarctica's nature. The Madrid Protocol is mentioned because of this reason. If this continent were opened to public, the results of the researches that inform us about our lang syne would not be realistic. If we want to know real information, we should keep this continent as it has been. In this case, the Madrid Protocol is of vital importance. On the other hand, the second text focuses on the habitat of Antarctica. It includes lots of substantial information of this continent's history. To sake of an example, where it was located 500 years ago, how its climate was, and how it reached today's climate and location are written in the text. Before I read this text, I had not had a big knowledge about Antarctica. I had only known that it was the coldest region of the world. To sum up, I must say that both of the texts are useful to inform people. And also, this topic is the most attractive topic I have read in our book.

The text which is about Antartica really catched me when I read it.First text was more likely about the people who went there because of some resons.Archeologists go there because it contains all history from ancient times to today. Also, many scientists go there because ice there lies the information about weather conditions and other clues which lead scientists to find the truth under the million-yeared ice.To have such a vital source for searching ,we should keep this continent. So,Madrid Protocol was very important for future of this continent. The second text was about how the continent had formed long long years ago and what was its habitat and flora. It was informative and catchy text for me because I like to read this kind of biological and geographical information. It contained the information of a documantary and it was good. Also , as I remember from the biology lessons, the adaptations which animals and flora of this continent had were stated in the text .I like to see the thing that I know.I hope we'll read a lot of text like these ones.

  5. READING JOURNAL -10

The issue of this week was focusing on Antartica which is interesting and mysterious place. In the book, there were great informations and all of them were adequate to understand what kind of place Antartica is.The text, which is in the book, was written like a daily while travelling in a cruise ship.At the beginning of the text, there were some informations about conflicting ideas among the visitors, scientist, and seekers. Also,it is stated that there is no soverignty which is gained by specific nation. That's why it is obvious that these conflicting ideas about Antartica will not finish.Among them, the most dangerous one is oil and mineral seekers.Because of their commercial purpose to exploit it,the natural environment of Antartica can be in danger.Purpose of prohibiting these kind of enterprises, some treaties have already been law in force. In my opinion, they will not be enough to stop them.To me ,if Antartica were be calmer and more lively place, the sources of it would be depleted. While the fist text was focusing on general and political informations, the second text was focusing on specific informations about species in Antartica.I will not mentioned something form it because they are unlimeted. To conclude,in the future. There will be always endless discussions, but the main point which people shuld realize and not forget is that Antartica is the only place where the peace and freedom still remain. That's why every alive genaration should protect it for the next ones to show that the real peace and freedom can not be provided with governments or borders.

  6. Antarctica, a secret continent.. This week our topic is Antarctica. As always, the book has given a lot of silly political disagreement like Madrid Protocol or environmentalists, others, scientists.all of them do want the continent for their profits. On the other hand, second passage was better than first one.Second passage tries to explain how Antarctica occured. In my estimation, occuring of the continent and it's history the most important things. Therefore, I like second one more than the first one. However, there are lots of things that I do not know. For instance, I have never heard about growing plants in Antarctica. Also, I did not know why is Antactica is so special, and vital for our earth.Generally, this passage better than others, at least it did not suffocate us which includes silly researches.

  7. I did not know that Antartica was the coldest and driest place on earth. It was such a nice text. Lots of knowledge about Antartica such as; its has bigger places than some countries on earth plus it includes many contoversies wheter it should be exploited or not. I really like the controversical stuff among the parts of the text.Especially the Madrid protocol part is quite interesting. It surprise me that there are countries who are not trying to exploit such a rich place and also scientists are right. They should be processing researchs on the surface of the Antartica for the future of humankind.

This week topic is Antarctica. Both texts are about Antarctica. They are related but there is a little difference between them, that is, while the text in handout is about the smallest continent, the other text is about Antarctica's diplomatic status. Both are interesting ,but I like the text in the book because it contains less technical terms. Also, it gives some historical informations. Before I read the text, I did not know anything about Madrid Protocol. Not only Madrid Protocol, but also Antarctic Treaty is pretty new for me. According to Madrid Protocol, countries have been banned all exploration or commercial exploitation for 50 years. I wonder what the countries will do after this period. Maybe it cause a crisis between some countries. In the handout, writer mentioned about phsical appearance of Antarctica. Unlike first text, I do not like this one. There was only one point that I want to emphasise. The point is importance of this continent. If people do not aware of this vital topic, there will no place to live for men.

This week we talked about cold, remote, strange, and inhospitable land of penguins. First of all, I want to say that I really like the concord between the texts. They completed each other in a really good way. First text included some information and questions about owner of Antarctica, Antatctica's general features, and importance of Antarctica. The second text explained these general informations deeply. After this compliment, lets look at the details. I have to say that this text was informative (actually both are like that, but I am talking about first one) becasue I learn a lot of useful things. I have never thought that Antarctica is a very unnecessary land, but I did not know its vital importance. The continent prevents the planet from overheating, and it is a home for a lot of birds and mammals which are found nowhere else. There are some politics things which are important(really) but I do not like talk about them.Shortly, some countries signed a protocol which is Madrid Protocol, and their decision was that Antarctica was a continent for science and peace, but the protocol was not signed by all contries, and the countries which did not sign think that they have right for doing whatever they want on the Antarctica because there is no owner except penguins, but I like the word of Albert Gore. He said it should had been held in trust as a global ecological reserve for all the people of the world. If we move to second text I can say that it was a good explaniton for first text. It explained Antarctica's climate, flora, conglomeration, and animals. When you read both texts together, I guarantee that you have a lot of knowledge about Antarctica.

  10. Antarctica is the topic of this week. I am amazed to see a text like this worth reading in this book. However, Antarctica it is. First of all, both texts are quite informational. First text is mainly about some political problems about this continent. It gives information about history of the scientific studies of the continent which are not totally correct. Also, it is easily understood from the text that everyone or every company wants to exploit the continent for themselves. Thanks to the Madrid Protocol and the Antarctic Treaty, the continent can live longer. Actually the continent is not saved permanently, but because of the treaties the possible war for it just delayed for 50 years. Its destiny is still not clear. Second text is away from these political games. It focuses on its real history, climate, flora, animals, and its importance for our world and human life. It gives really interesting information about the continent for people looking for learning some about the continent beside politics. Thus, the second text is more beneficial than the first one, although they both are quite informative.
